With Memorial Day just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share some free coloring pages that kids can color as a reminder of this special day and why we celebrate it. These printable Memorial Day coloring pages are designed to with icons and symbols that are meant to bring to remembrance all of those soldiers who fought and died in American Wars. Think hearts, stars, national emblems, and of course, the American flag. These color by number worksheets are a great way to practice fine motor skills while also teaching kids about the brave soldiers who gave their lives fighting for the United States. Use them in conjunction with other typical Memorial Day activities like outdoor games, backyard BBQs, and more to give kids of all ages (even older kids like color by number pages) a fun way to cool down from the typical active games that happens Memorial Day weekend. You could also use these for 4th of July as patriotic coloring pages if you want, but I like them for Memorial Day with their use of all the stars and hearts.
What is Memorial Day
Before we get into the Memorial Day coloring pages, I recommend making sure that kids understand what Memorial Day actually is, especially compared to Labor Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day. I think sometimes kids know that we celebrate a federal holiday for particular days but have no idea why we celebrate it. Talk to the kids about how we celebrate Memorial Day as a way to remember all of those in the armed forces who fought and died in American wars while in military service. Unlike Veteran’s Day where we honor all U.S. men and women service members, Memorial Day is a day for honoring those who passed away in service. It’s a holiday celebrated the last Monday of May in the United States (just this specific country, not others).

This set of coloring pages comes with six different free printable Memorial Day pages – all featuring the colors red, white, and blue as well as symbols of love, honor, and bravery like hearts, stars, and flags. And since Memorial Day is also one of the biggest barbecue days of the year, there’s one page that has typical symbols of barbecues like watermelon, popsicles, and desserts! Pick and choose the coloring sheets that you or your kids like the best and all you have to do is print them out then color using the color guides at the top of the page! I personally love doing coloring sheets with my kids because they promote hand coordination while also getting them focus on something for a few minutes. And these ones in particular are fun because it helps them with picture comprehension since you can’t tell exactly what things are until they’re colored in!
